I love learning about a driven person’s road to success: Azzedine Alaia is a Tunisian-born haute couture designer. In the late 1970s he opened his first atelier in his little apartment and created couture pieces there for the next 30 years, dressing big names such as Greta Garbo. He presented his first ready to wear collection in 1980 and he was awarded Best Designer of the Year four years later. His climb began in the 80’s and he became “the King of Cling,” as the media used to call him and Alaia presented his first ready to wear collection in 1983. His evolution is marked by a partnership with Prada in 2000, his impressive come-back in 2007, independence and a true passion for discrete luxury.
Alaia’s designs have proudly been worn by Tina Turner, Madonna, Naomi Campbell, Shakira, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Carla Bruni and even first lady Michelle Obama. His name can be associated with the best designers in the world, as he is best friends with Miu Miu and Marc Jacobs. Alaia has been creating couture pieces for decades now – his official recognition was long coming and is finally here – 30 years in the making! As they say, the road to success is a long and windy one, but worth the journey. Amen.
